SHOULD
WE
STOP DEFORESTATION?
Republic Act No. 3701. AN ACT TO DISCOURAGE DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS, FURTHER AMENDING FOR THE PURPOSE SECTION TWENTY-SEVEN HUNDRED FIFTY-ONE OF THE REVISED ADMINISTRATIVE CODE states that, if the offense is committed within a forest reserve, a fine of eight times the regular government charges on the timber or other forest products so unlawfully destroyed, and in addition thereto, imprisonment for not less than six months nor more than one year and six months; If the offense is committed in any of the public forests, other than those mentioned under subsections (a) and (b) hereof, a fine equivalent to four times the regular government charges upon the timber or other forest products so unlawfully destroyed, and in addition thereto, imprisonment for not less than three months nor more than six months.
Trees absorb and store carbon dioxide. If forests are cleared, or even disturbed, they release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Forest loss and damage is the cause of around 10% of global warming. There's simply no way we can fight the climate crisis if we don't stop deforestation.

Reforestation helps the environment by guaranteeing, or accelerating the re-establishment of healthy forest structure by regrowing the forest canopy and preserving biodiversity within the ecosystem.

Habitat Restoration and Improved Biodiversity
Replanting forests or planting new forests with a diverse number of tree species can help to restore habitats and promote biodiversity of both plant and animal species. Many animals have lost their habitats due to urbanization and deforestation for agricultural needs. Restoring these lands can allow for ecosystems to heal naturally.
Climate Change Mitigation
As mentioned above, trees and forests are responsible for absorbing carbon dioxide. They can hold carbon in their branches, trunks, and roots for a long time with proper forest management. This storage of carbon can help to combat climate change.
Forest Products and Improved Economies
Reforestation will enable us to responsibly use natural resources by replanting trees that have been harvested for use. One acre of conifer forest would yield around 7,000 board feet of lumber in only 50 years. And that still leaves 30,000 board feet to continue growing in reserve. Reforestation also helps economies by providing jobs.
